While panel production will reportedly start in the third quarter, with LG named as the key candidate, the device itself is believed to come off the assembly line either in the same quarter or in the holiday period. Aside from LG, Apple is allegedly considering AU Optronics, Japan Display and Sharp as potential screen makers for the upcoming tablet.

Pictures allegedly showing the rear shell of a Retina iPad mini have appeared on Chinese forum Weiphone. However, the authenticity of the images remains dubious, as the logo and writing on the casing are bright blue rather than black or silver like on the current model. The parts depicted on the photos also seem to be thicker that those featured in the existing tablet – the fact the source of the pictures has used an argument that the device sports a higher-resolution screen.

iPad mini 2 to Feature Retina Display Comparable with Full-Size iPad

As newly reported by BrightWire, the iPad mini 2 will sport a Retina Display with a resolution of 2048×1536 and a pixel density of 324ppi. While the rumored resolution is equal to that of the 9.7-inch Retina iPad and is four times higher than the resolution of the current iPad mini, such screen would pack even more pixels than the full-size iPad 4.

iPad mini to Get Retina Display Late 2013?

Although the iPad mini just hit the shelves, rumors already hint at a Retina model of Apple’s new smaller tablet. According to anonymous supply chain sources, iPad mini screen manufacturer AU Optronics is already readying a 2,048×1,536 display for a future 7.9-inch update.

Such resolution would equal that of the two latest regular-size iPads and also result in a higher pixel density. While the full-size fourth-generation tablet features a pixel density of 264 pixels per inch, cramming the same number of pixels into a smaller screen would bring that characteristic up to more than 300 pixels per inch. To compare, the existing model only offers 163 pixels per inch.

Alleged 13-inch Retina MacBook Spotted in Geekbench Logs

Late last month, test results for an unreleased “MacBook Pro 10,2” device running OS X 10.8 and powered by a 2.9Ghz Intel Core i7-3520M Ivy Bridge chip first surfaced in Geekbench logs. According to the sole listing for the system, it earned 7806 points.

While being significantly less than 10999 points scored by the new 15-inch MacBook Pro featuring a Retina Display and a2.3Ghz Intel Core i7-3615QM CPU, that’s still more than scores of about 5000 awarded to 13-inch MacBook Pros released in early 2011. The comparison suggests the mysterious model could be a 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro.
