Apple Remains U.S. Most Profitable Company Despite Weaker-Than-Expected Quarter

Despite a “disappointing” December quarter marred by a drastic decline in Mac sales and untypically low gross margins, Apple is still the most profitable company in the U.S. During the three-month span, the iPhone maker generated $13.1 billion in profit – more than any other tech firm was ever able to earn in a single quarter. The previous record – $13.06 billion – was set by Apple as well in the same period a year ago.

Windows 8 Launch Slated for Oct. 26, New Hardware to Follow

During its latest annual sales meeting, Microsoft announced that Windows 8 would roll out in 231 markets on October 26th.  Existing Windows XP, 7 or Vista users will be able to upgrade for $40 as well as optionally add Windows Media Center free of charge via the new OS’ “add features” option. The Windows 8 release is expected to be followed by a string of PC, Ultrabooks and tablets running the next-gen version.

Activists deliver rights petitions to Apple’s Grand Central store

On Wednesday, activists started drawing attention to their event with a press release stating that they would bring over 250,000 signatures to the Grand Central Terminal store, trying to reveal claims of employee abuse at Foxconn to the general public. As CNet reports, a small bunch of supporters who arrived on Thursday were far outnumbered by media representatives to cover the meeting.

Microsoft has corroborated talk about opening another retail location that will clash with an Apple store on its Facebook page and through separate confirmations. The new outlet will be located in the Domain shopping center in northern Austin, an area the Cupertino handset maker has occupied for five years. The company hasn’t provided an exact location of the store, nor has it announced a date of its opening.
