The government office of Taiwan has warned local producers of PCs that a new patent of Apple for its MacBook Air could stop the sales of ultrabook models. In June, 2012, Apple obtained a U.S. patent for designing its MacBook Air gadgets. The representatives from the intellectual property office of the country’s Ministry of Economic Affairs are worried that the patent might cause legal problems for the sale of ultrabooks taking into account the fact that the design of thin and light laptops resembles the MacBook Air.

Nearly five years have passed since the MacBook Air was introduced. Apple built it to be the lightest Apple laptop in existence, it was the first of its kind and it gave us a sneak peek of the future. However, the first product was very expensive and it had many disadvantages: it was slow, it had a small storage and only one USB port. Apple then came up with a second iteration, which was like an improved version of the first. It received good reviews because although it looked the same at the first sight; it was faster, had better video capabilities, more storage and was relatively cheap. They went on to make a third iteration which was even faster, cheaper, had a second USB port and a second alternative; the 11 inch model which was the ‘road warrior dream’. Apple continued to make better iterations for the MacBook. This led to a new iteration of the MacBook Air, the mid-2012 version of the MacBook Air.

The number of complaints in the Apple Support Communities thread dedicated to low battery performance on MacBook Pros and MacBook Airs which were updated to the newly launched Mountain Lion has reportedly reached 15 pages, prompting Apple to start an investigation. In an attempt to detect the source of the issue, the company has allegedly sent out a questionnaire on Friday. While most users report battery drains of around 1-2 hours, some claim their devices are only capable of functioning for a little longer than 2 hours.

Intel launching desktop chips; ultrabook, MacBook CPUs due in June

During Intel’s earnings conference call for the first quarter, CEO Paul Otellini announced that Ivy Bridge processors intended for the MacBook Air update and ultrabooks will hit the market a couple of months later, while Monday’s launch is for more performance-oriented devices. The first wave of Ivy Bridge chips is reportedly quad-core, meaning it is mostly bound for desktop computers. The mainstream notebook dual-core CPUs are said to arrive with the second launch in June.
