During the Mountain Lion unveiling event at this year’s WWDC, Apple announced an Up-to-Date program providing a free upgrade to the new system once it hits the market for any customer who obtains a Mac on or after June 11th. Since the company is planning to distribute OS X 10.8 solely through digital download, the free upgrade is actually a redemption code for the online venue.

Research: Macs Are As Popular As in 1985

Horace Dediu with Asymco claims that the gap between PC and Mac sales has gradually been reducing over the past several years and is now at the level of 1985, not too long after Apple launched its first Mac. The analyst drew up a chart showing how the ratio of PC and Mac shipments has been changing over more than 25 years since 1984.

Following the debut of the first Mac, the ratio was roughly 20 to 1. For about 10 years, the ratio rose and fell several times until it was cemented at 15 to 1 in 1996 and subsequently started to increase steadily every year. Through the next few years, PCs continued to significantly outperform Macs, as the ratio peaked at around 55 to 1 in 2004.
