According to DisplaySearch, Apple could equip its widely popular iPad mini with a Retina Display in the second half of this year. While panel production will reportedly start in the third quarter, with LG named as the key candidate, the device itself is believed to come off the assembly line either in the same quarter or in the holiday period. Aside from LG, Apple is allegedly considering AU Optronics, Japan Display and Sharp as potential screen makers for the upcoming tablet.

Hit-or-miss Asian publication DigiTimes reports that LG saw a 90% cut in full-size iPad screen orders from December to January. During that period, Apple allegedly decreased orders for 9.7-inch displays from 6 million to 600,000.
The reduction is blamed on growing user interest in the iPad mini, as most of the 5 million panels supplied by LG were actually for the smaller tablet. The California device maker could have also simply overproduced full-size iPad units to keep up with holiday demand and is now slowing down the manufacturing process to clear post-Christmas in-channel inventory.

E-commerce website Alibaba has posted pictures of multiple iPad 5 cases, which all seem to suggest the next-generation full-size model will switch to a more iPad mini-like design. One listing even offers branding and logos for the accessories on customer request. All covers feature identical slots for controls, connectors, microphones and speakers, giving a rather clear idea of how the upcoming device may look like on the outside.

Pictures allegedly showing the rear shell of a Retina iPad mini have appeared on Chinese forum Weiphone. However, the authenticity of the images remains dubious, as the logo and writing on the casing are bright blue rather than black or silver like on the current model. The parts depicted on the photos also seem to be thicker that those featured in the existing tablet – the fact the source of the pictures has used an argument that the device sports a higher-resolution screen.
