In the same timeframe, T-Mobile also allegedly intends to eliminate phone subsidies and start offering contract-free handsets with cheaper monthly fees than most other wireless providers in America.

According to research firm IDC, Android is taking advantage over Apple in certain parts of Europe due to the iPhone maker’s dependence on high carrier subsidies for its handset. Last year, the iPhone represented over one fifth of the U.S. and U.K. smartphone market. However, the device managed to take only 9% and 5% shares in Portugal and Greece, two of European countries heaviest plagued by the economic recession. Smartphone shipments costing over $300 before subsidies dropped below 50% in these countries.
