On Wednesday, AnandTech obtained an iPhone 5 review sample to run an unofficial SunSpider v0.9.1 test on the JavaScript benchmarking tool. To the general surprise, Apple’s new dual-core A6 system-on-a-chip scorched through the benchmark in 914.7msec, easily outperforming the former leader Lava XOLO X900 at 1279.4msec. The second-place unit is powered by a single-core Intel Atom Z2460 Penwell system-on-a-chip based on the company’s Medfield platform.

In an effort to steal some momentum from Apple’s newly unveiled iPhone 5, Samsung has launched a new print ad directly comparing the handset to its own Galaxy S III – of course, not in Apple’s favor. The two devices are shown next to one another under the headline “It doesn’t take a genius,” a black sixth iPhone with its screen dead and a white S III with its display activated. Samsung has seen its motion to lift the previously granted Galaxy Tab 10.1 sales ban declined, as Judge Lucy Koh said the case should be directed to the appeals court now. However, she did agree that the company’s filing does make an interesting point, given that the device was cleared of Apple’s infringement claims during the jury trial last month.
